Referrals are always a joy. I married Shirvahna and Petr in July 2008 at the “W” Hotel with David Burton as the photographer. It was such a memorable wedding that David still recalled it with great warmth as we chatted before Shrivahna’s cousin’s wedding at an iconic Queens location that once hosted the World’s Fair — two, to be precise.
Last November, I met Ashley and Kelmy. They are among many, many intercultural couples who fall in love and marry. To myself and most others, intercultural and interfaith marriages seem as natural and poignant as any other marriage. We must remember, though, that even a generation ago, families had difficulty with their children marrying someone of another cultural or ethnicity. The same is true for same-sex couples. I find it most appropriate that Ashley and Kelmy married at Terrace on the Park, which overlooks Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, home to scores of families from across the world.
